MOAA National supports a number of national legislative priorities, and we focus also on issues facing veterans in the great state of Michigan. To that end, we encourage members to familiarize themselves with both sets of issues. Review the MOAA Advocacy page and the Michigan Commander's Group (MICG) page and then take a stand on issues you can get behind. Both the MOAA and the MICG will get your voice to your state and national legislators. Click the buttons below for more information.
Interested members work with national and state government representatives in advocating for legislation supporting national defense and benefits for military members and their families. Chapter members are encouraged to make regular use of pre-drafted legislative emails found in the MOAA Legislative Action Center that are automatically routed to their representative in the House of Representatives and their Senators. Members are also encouraged to follow up with telephone calls, letters, and/or visits. For state legislation, members are encouraged use the MCG legislative functions. The chapter is ready to assist, train and educate members in the use of these legislative advocacy tools. 

Selected members who represent the chapter at meetings of the Michigan Council of Chapters of MOAA may also be eligible to represent Michigan at MOAA’s annual spring advocacy campaign in Washington DC, Advocacy in Action. Current legislative issues include restoration of the Basic Allowance for Housing, protection of military health care, and military pharmacy benefits.

We’re asking every member to participate in our digital campaign. Sending a message through MOAA’s Legislative Action Center takes just a few minutes, but it adds your voice to a chorus Congress cannot ignore heading into an election year
This year’s summer campaign focuses on three priorities affecting veterans and servicemembers and their families right now, and where meaningful progress is within reach this congressional session:
  • Expanding the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) to military spouses. WOTC expired at the end of 2025. Reauthorizing it — and adding military spouses as an eligible group — would give employers a meaningful incentive to hire a population that has faced stubbornly high unemployment for more than a decade.   • Restoring GLP-1 coverage for TRICARE For Life (TFL) beneficiaries. In August 2025, TRICARE ended coverage of GLP-1 medications for TFL beneficiaries being treated for obesity-related conditions. Thousands of retirees are now paying out of pocket or going without treatments that were improving their health. Learn More | Take Action | Share Your Story

  • Supporting combat-injured veterans with the Major Richard Star Act. Combat-injured veterans who were medically retired before reaching 20 years of service currently lose a dollar of earned retirement pay for every dollar of VA disability compensation they receive. Legislation to correct that injustice has strong bipartisan support and multiple paths forward in Congress. Learn More | Take Action
