Our Mission
MOAA is the nation's largest and most influential association of military officers. It is an independent, nonprofit, politically nonpartisan organization. With about 370,000 members from every branch of service - including active duty, retired, National Guard, Reserve, and former officers, spouses and their families - we are a powerful force speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of military, enlisted and officers, at every stage of their careers.  The association plays an active role in military personnel matters especially proposed legislation affecting the career force, the retired community, and veterans of the uniformed services.

The Capitol Area Chapter, MOAA, was chartered on November 12, 1970. Col (Ret) Howard E. Derby, USAR, as Regional Representative of the Retired Officers Association made the presentation.

Membership included a generous mix of all US services, officer ranks, and spouses.  The Chapter has experienced regular growth, currently with more than 170 members.  All members of US Uniformed Services are strongly encouraged to join and take an active role in the Chapter. With One Powerful Voice, a strong national defense and our earned benefits can be maintained.
Membership
Membership in the chapter is open to anyone who holds or has ever held a position as a commissioned or warrant officer in any component of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, Public Health Service or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and their surviving spouses. Chapter dues are separate from MOAA national dues and are $15 annually.

If you are the surviving spouse of a MOAA national lifetime member,
MOAA national prime dues paying member, we are pleased to honor your continuing MOAA national membership with a complimentary chapter lifetime membership.  We look forward to meeting you.

What We Are

The Capitol Area Chapter is an affiliate of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the Michigan Council of Chapters (MCOC).  The association is a non-profit organization operated exclusively for purposes beneficial to the interests of the Nation and its Uniformed Services personnel, their dependents, and survivors.  The Capitol Area Chapter of MOAA is comprised of commissioned officers. While we are an organization of officers, we are for all active, reserve, and National guard members of the Armed Services. We advocate for a strong national defense and hard-earned military benefits. Our service focus includes not only the service member, but also spouses, family members, those who support the military, and the community and country at large.

MOAA is a national organization of over 360,000 officers headquartered in Alexandria, VA. We are one of over 390 MOAA chapters nationally and one of four chapters in Michigan.
The chapter issues a chapter newsletter on a regular basis. The chapter is a member of the Michigan Council of Chapters of MOAA.

We encourage each veteran to become aware and knowledgeable of their legally entitled and earned Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits through resources such as the Veterans Facilitator YouTube channel.

We honor the value of military service education programs and recognize the outstanding performance of JROTC and ROTC students by providing MOAA medals to students at area high schools, and Michigan State University.

We encourage members to join the national MOAA organization and advocate for important military legislation on a national and state basis.  Current legislative focuses include but are not limited to:
  • Passage of the Major Richard Star Act to ensure service members receive both their earned retirement (DoD) benefit and their earned (VA) disability benefits without offset.
  • Restoration of Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for military service members and their families from 95% to 100%.
  • Protection of TRICARE For Life against continuing efforts to impose costly fees on current and future military retirees.
We encourage chapter members to volunteer for service opportunities in the local community including but not limited to:
  • Working at area voting precincts during election years.
  • Supporting other veteran service organizations to help veterans, Toys for Tots, VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, MI. and VA Hospital in Battle Creek.
  • Participation in Wreaths Across America programs in December at participating cemeteries

We are happy to welcome you to membership and allow you to determine your own place in the chapter.  We have multiple service opportunities in leadership, member recruitment, personal affairs, and military-to-civilian transition.  We also elect chapter officers annually in November and encourage you to consider running for an office.  Among openings are:
  • President of the Chapter
  • 1st VP - Programs Director
  • 2nd VP - Membership coordinator.
  • 3rd VP - Meeting/event/activity coordinator.
